Cataract Awareness

Cataract a Common Eye Condition

Cataract surgery is a common eye procedure to remove the cloudy lens in your eye and replace it with a clear artificial lens, known as an intraocular lens (IOL). Cataract surgery is recommended when cataracts interfere with your daily activities, such as reading, and driving.

The proteins in the eye lens start to break down around age 40.  While symptoms often become noticeable by age 60. Studies have shown cataract surgery can not only improve vision but also decrease falls, car accidents and improve your ability to do activities that you were unable to do because of their poor vision.

What to Expect

  • Before Surgery: Your eye will be measured to determine the correct focusing power for your IOL. You might need to stop taking certain medications and start using prescribed eye drops to prevent infection and reduce swelling.
  • During Surgery: The cataract procedure is performed on an outpatient basis. The surgeon will make tiny incisions to remove the cloudy lens and insert the new lens.
  • Recovery: Most people experience improved vision within several days, but full healing can take up to a month. You will need to use eye drops and avoid strenuous activities.
