Griffin First in USA to Use Nano-Laser

Dr. Neil B. Griffin of the Griffin Eye Center, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina achieved two firsts. He was the first ophthalmic surgeon in the U.S.A. to use the Cetus Nano-Laser system, an FDA-approved laser technology developed and produced by A.R.C. Laser, for cataract surgery and the world first to use the combination of Nano-Laser with the FDA approved Zepto™ Capsulotomy System.  The Nano-Laser is a cataract lens extraction method that uses a laser to precisely deliver energy where it is required, giving a more comfortable and more gentle option over the currently used ultrasound energy. The benefits include no moving parts, less energy emitted within the eye, and laser-precision application of this energy which means less trauma and faster rehabilitation for his patients.

A leading ophthalmic surgeon, Dr. Griffin is excited to be able to offer Nano-Laser photofragmentation to his cataract patients. He stated, “this laser procedure reduces the amount of energy required for cataract removal by about 90% in comparison to traditional phacoemulsification. The pulsing energy strikes a titanium target, producing a localized cone-like plasm energy bubble that fragments the cataract permitting its removal. The laser-precision of this method means that I have to use less energy, reducing corneal swelling and time required for recovery.”

Dr. Griffin specializes in cataract, LASIK and corneal surgery. He received his medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He served his internship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and completed his residency at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. He completed a highly-specialized fellowship in cornea and external disease at the University of Texas in Houston. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is also a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
